A plant-based diet and veganism, in general, have been the centre of many arguments. The popularity of this particular lifestyle is a factor of the amount of information we are exposed to every day, climate change, and health issues. People choose veganism for many different reasons. Some do it for health reasons and others do it for ethical reasons. No matter what, you can’t deny that a vegan diet is good for oneself and others.

Transitioning to a vegan diet has its benefits and its challenges. One of the things that push people away from a vegan diet is the stigma surrounding it. Because of the popularity of this lifestyle, many people think of it as a trend that others adapt to look cool.

Eating out

Vegan restaurants are not common in many places. Fellow vegans that live in city centers might have an easier time finding a place to eat out but this is not the case for all. Some regular restaurants might serve a few vegan dishes but they are usually blunt and not of great quality.

Social events

Social events are always tricky when it comes to vegans. If you’re not going to a vegan food event, chances that all the food will contain some sort of meat, eggs, or dairy. If you try asking for something that is vegan you will most probably be met with a million questions and statements.


Travelling can be hard if you’re a vegan. Depending on the place you’re visiting, finding vegan meals and restaurants is not the easiest of tasks. To overcome this challenge, research the place you’re travelling to so you know exactly where and what you will be eating.


People have opinions, a lot of them. They will always try to question your diet choices and judge you for eating a certain way. A way to overcome this is to think about it as something that concerns you and only you.

Finding vegan products

Vegan products are not that common and finding them can be a challenge. Meat, dairy, and egg substitutes are great if you want to create dishes you have always loved but that contain those products.


Transitioning to a plant-based diet and a vegan lifestyle can feel overwhelming for some people. Not everyone can go from a meat eater to vegan overnight. Diet is very personal and adapting it to the individual is key for a successful transition. Here are a few tips for a smoother transition to a vegan diet.

Educate yourself

The first step in transforming your eating habits is educating yourself. Information is largely viable to us and everyone can access it on the internet. Understanding what a vegan diet requires will enable you to make educated choices. Learning about the benefits of veganism will motivate and inspire you. When you understand what veganism stands for you will go into it with enthusiasm.

Add new ingredients to your food

Before you fully transition to a vegan diet try incorporating more fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, etc. Try a new vegan dish every week and start cooking more. Testing the waters can help you make a smoother transition and you can get a sense of what you like and what you don’t. Continue by eating a vegan meal a day or have a day where you only eat vegan food.


Maintaining a vegan diet can feel overwhelming and challenging for some people but is always worth it. Considering the environmental impact of animal agriculture, the impact of a meat-based diet in your health, etc. overcoming a little challenge seems worth it.
