If you haven’t heard of Veganuary, where have you been!? This amazing project has been running since 2014, aiming to encourage people to try veganism, not just in January, but throughout the year. If you’ve signed up this year, that’s fantastic, well done! You’re going to help make a real difference and I hope you feel the same at the end of the month. If you haven’t signed up but you’re interested, I hope the following five tips really help you to think about any swaps you can make to help care for the animals and the environment. We may be a third of the way through the month, but there is still time to give it a go and make changes to help animals, the planet and yourself! 1. If you slip up, don’t panic and give up! Transitioning to veganism is a learning curve and food producers sometimes sneak random animal products into different products (like milk in certain crisps!) Just start afresh and use it as a lesson to know what you can exchange it for at a later date. But there are loads of clearly marked alternatives out there so you don’t have to miss out on your favourite foods. Of course, I’m a big OPP fan (but then again I love pizza). But you can also get many great vegan alternatives to meat – VBites, Fry’s, and chain own brands also clearly mark their vegan alternatives.
2. Eating out with friends and family doesn’t have to be difficult. Many restaurants already have at least one dish on their menu that is vegan and many now offer dedicated vegan menus! But if you’re in any doubt, in personal experience I always drop a restaurant a call or message if I’m unsure – most chefs I’ve come across often want to try and show off their talents! Even better this month? Many restaurants are running Veganuary promotions!
3. Check out some bloggers and websites to help you. There are loads of websites and helpful tips out there to help new vegans. Search for Accidentally Vegan UK or of course Veganuary for some great meal ideas.
4. Vegan alcohol isn’t as rare as you think! Despite what some articles like to tell everyone, you absolutely can still enjoy some drinks if you choose to. Barnivore is a great tool to find out whether most alcohols are vegan friendly. Failing that, most spirits (apart from liqueurs which often contain creams) are vegan and many shops are now getting better at labelling their own wines and beers; including Co-op, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose. Even then, a quick Google search often brings up the vegan lists for most stores.
5. Don’t let others make you doubt your decision to try Veganuary. There has been significant coverage in the media over the past couple of years aiming to put a negative light on vegans, but your choice to try Veganuary IS going to make a difference. Keep at it! Many new vegans are converted by friends and family giving it a go too! You can be that spark.
